DESIGN DEMOCRACY 2026: ZIMSTING

Zimsting is a hand-crafted night lamp created as a part of the Design Democracy 2026 exhibition held in Hyderabad. It draws Inspiration from objects in the Ladakhi-Tibetan household; namely the Chok a low table and the Skyongste a traditional lamp, carrying light and warmth.

Guiding its dynamic, portable nature is the larger ethos of Tibetan furniture, defined by necessity, adaptability, and multi-functional design. At the core of its craft is transformational movement; the lamp is made to unfold for use and collapse back down as needed. Handcrafted from Elm and Chinar wood, Zimsting’s geometry relies on weight and balance to guide each piece into its place. Its components are assembled using intricate wooden joinery, without relying exessively on hardware. 

More than a functional piece of décor, Zimsting is a continuation of memory, movement, and light. It honors the nomadic spirit of the Himalayas, a lifestyle where mobility and craftsmanship are inextricably linked. Hence, the lamp captures a contemporary aesthetic without ever severing ties to its vernacular roots.
