The project involves the design and construction of a multi-use pavilion within the premises of Kailash Guesthouse, Leh. Conceived as a climatically responsive and structurally efficient intervention, the pavilion synthesizes vernacular Ladakhi building typologies with contemporary construction logic.
The spatial organization draws from the traditional shelkhang (glazed sunroom), integrated with battered load-bearing stone masonry walls typical of the region. These thick walls provide thermal mass, structural stability, and protection against extreme climatic conditions, while the glazed shelkhang maximizes passive solar gain during the cold season.
The roof is conceived as a woven timber structure, fabricated using reclaimed timber sourced locally. This lightweight yet robust structural system spans between stone walls, minimizing material usage while achieving large clear spans. The woven configuration enhances structural redundancy, distributes loads efficiently, and allows for controlled daylight penetration.
Material selection prioritizes local availability, low embodied energy, and on-site craftsmanship. Stone masonry, timber joinery, and glazing systems are assembled through a hybrid construction process involving local artisans and contemporary detailing techniques. The resulting structure accommodates multiple functions including dining, gatherings, workshops, and informal social use.
