Field Architects were approached by the hotel owners to design the façade and courtyard landscape for a newly built extension to their existing property. The structure had already been constructed in an RCC framework, with a misaligned column grid and beam layout that resulted in a heavy and somewhat unresolved massing. The courtyard was formed over an RCC slab with newly created underground parking beneath, making the landscape design particularly challenging. Working on a concrete base required careful consideration of load, drainage, and the creation of meaningful spatial depth within a constrained condition.
The studio reinterpreted and articulated the built form through a Ladakhi traditional vocabulary, grounding it in cultural memory while introducing subtle contemporary nuances. Although the practice does not typically undertake standalone façade treatments, the project offered an opportunity to transform an inert concrete frame into an architecture that felt rooted and contextually coherent. The elevation was finished in earthen plaster and stone, materials that softened the mass and anchored the building within its landscape and regional identity.
The courtyard was conceived as a constellation of wooden stupa-like elements, expressed as planters and outdoor seating dispersed across the space. These interventions created moments of pause and gathering, while a carefully composed layout of stone paving defined zones within the court, maintaining both continuity and flow.
